I was linked to Anthony at Lives Lived Well in Rockhampton after I had some respite. I was in respite relearning my coping skills and self care as I was overwhelmed with my life. I’m a survivor of many traumas starting in my childhood. I was being abused in my daily life and needed to set boundaries. I became addicted to marajauana to keep me calm and my mind numb.
I learned I no longer needed to do that as I now had skills and knowledge to choose differently. I had existing not living. When I started seeing my drug councillor or support person, I was nervous about being able to really stop my addiction. I was extremely lucky to been linked to Anthony as he had a wide range of experience dealing with not just drugs but domestic violence etc. I felt safe, not judged (which is a massive relief), and was able to speak about the complexity of my life issues. With his education and support, he explained many of my behaviours, fears, doubts etc. He gave me strategies to use that were helpful. The service works on harm reduction rather than a direct stop, for me that was very helpful as I didn’t feel like I was failing at yet another thing.
Now after three months of his support I’m proud to say I no longer “need” any drug to cope. I truly don’t think I would have made it to this stage without the support of Anthony and the service Lives Lived Well. I’m now happy with myself and my choices. It was empowering and that’s an amazing gift to help someone who felt so scared and broken and drug dependant. I’m sure I’ll still have days or times where I will want to revert to old habits. I now will always reach out for help and support. I love life and I love myself again, thank you doesn’t seem enough, so I’ll live well and enjoy my journey!
