"Re: Journey to Sydney Hospital"

About: Angel Flight Australia Anglicare Elizabeth Lodge Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital

(as a service user),

I want to thank the anaesthetist who was so great about my extreme needle phobia. He made feel much calmer and because of this I was not terrified. He did not make fun of me and was respectful that needles give me extreme fear.

Because of my social situation and financial barriers I had to access Angel Flight and Elizabeth Hunter Lodge (Heather)- they were friendly and kept me informed. The pilot even helped me get dinner.

I want to thank Suzana- who called me and then let Social Work know. Without this call I wouldn't have got the help I did.

I would like to especially thank Social Worker Sarah- without her help I wouldn't have been able to get here and I would be blind. In many part of my life I am alone and don't have others to draw upon and Sarah and the team have made me feel like I am not alone in overcoming the barriers to getting healthcare.

I want to thank the admitting nurse when I got here- he was very thorough and extremely friendly. He went out of his way to make me feel comfortable.

I think it might be helpful if doctors/nurses  are more understanding of the needs of patients from rural areas and that I might know what the local options are.

Dear Blindanimesailor,

Thank you for sharing your positive experiences with us. We recognise the inconvenience faced by patients travelling long distances from rural areas in order to receive hospital services. Your story is a great example of how the staff here at SSEH work together as a team to make your visit as effortless as possible.

The empathy and respect that was shown by the anaesthetist and staff, who went above and beyond, to make you feel comfortable is a true reflection of our CORE values. Be assured that I will share your kind words with the staff who cared for you. Suzana will receive a Care Opinion HERO award for her patient centered care and Sarah will receive a HERO award for her collaboration and support.

Kind Regards,

Dr. Pauline Rumma.

Director of Clinical Services
