"Gynaecology appointment"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Kalgoorlie Outpatient Clinic

(as the patient),

I recently seen a gyno to discuss some solutions for my endometriosis, they were nice however I feel like nothing got resolved and I feel was pretty much suggested to take either birth control ect which is an option I’m not going to consider. I asked if it was possible to get a laparoscopy as I’ve been told by a GP and others that it could possibly help know more about the situation/solutions, however I was told it wasn’t necessary and felt as though symptoms weren’t 'serious' enough for one.

My other complaint is I asked if I could also have a Pap smear due to never having one before, I was told the age to get one now has changed however I feel like if requested it shouldn’t be rejected. Overall they were nice although I wasn’t happy with the appointment which annoyed me because as it is I had to wait an extra month because my first scheduled appointment was cancelled due to there being no clinician rooms being available and would like to see another gyno possibly a woman next time.

Dear Anonymous15

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We genuinely appreciate hearing feedback about our services, it supports us to keep doing what we are doing well and to identify any changes we need to make. It can also help us to identify times when we need to communicate more about our services with patients and the community.

I am glad to hear that you found our Specialist to be caring and nice and that they took the time to explain the importance of trying out less invasive options such as medications before considering surgery, which is much more invasive with higher risks of complications.

I am sorry that you were impacted by the challenges we have faced with our Specialists being on unplanned leave which has led to the rescheduling of some of our gynaecology clinics. As a public service we strive to have highly qualified and consistent Specialists leading our services, however, to choose your own doctor you would need to access a private Specialist.

I am also glad to hear that you were interested in having a pap smear. Due to breakthroughs in vaccination as well as more accurate and less invasive Cervical Screening tests, pap smears are no longer undertaken routinely on young women. As they are a Medicare billed item, Cervical Screening Tests can either be self-administered or undertaken by a health professional. Health professionals who administer these screening tests are your GP, local women’s health clinic or Aboriginal Medical Service. You can find out more about the Cervical Screening test here Cervical Screening Test (healthywa.wa.gov.au). We will take the opportunity to share this information on our My Healthy Goldfields Facebook page to increase the awareness of women in the community.

If you need any further information please don’t hesitate to contact Alicia Michalanney our Director of the Kalgoorlie Health Campus on 9080 5817 who could assist with connecting you to the right team member.

Kind regards

Peter Tredinnick
