"Entered through ER, waiting for surgery"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Plastic Surgery

(as a relative),

My spouse attended ER with a deep glass laceration to their hand recently. They were seen to quite quickly but within a couple of hours it was determined the hand would need repair by plastic surgeon. My spouse was transfered to the short stay ward and was told to fast in preparation for surgery. Almost 4 days later, 3 x 20+ hour fasts, 3 x cannula replacements, I believe they were still waiting for surgery. My spouse was admitted as a private patient and we requested someone look into the option to have them transferred to a private hospital if it would get them seen to more quickly and I feel everyone I dealt with was vague or not assisting of the process. My partner had been cancelled 3 times and told to fast yet again and no indication of when surgery will take place.

Dear zebraxd77,

Thank you for your Care Opinion post. I am aware of your partners situation and I want to reassure you we are doing everything we can to facilitate surgery as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, being on the emergency list, other emergencies are also presenting to Fiona Stanley Hospital. All cases listed on the emergency list are risk assessed and prioritised accordingly.

This does not negate the fact that your partner is receiving less than ideal care – I completely agree that waiting for surgery for 4 days and hours of fasting is not acceptable. I am very sorry for their experience, please be assured that their case has already been escalated to the executive team (including myself) and we are working to provide your partner with the surgery they require as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty.
