"ENT waitlist"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / ENT

(as a relative),

My spouse is suffering from exostoses (surfers ear). They got a referral from their local GP to see the visiting ENT specialist, as we live elsewhere. The specialist then referred my spouse to SCGH, I believe as a cat 2, for surgery. This was about 3 years ago, if I can recall. We have since been back to our local hospital due to pain, loss of hearing and extremely painful ear infections. The doctor my partner saw, re referred them as a Priority 2 a few months ago.

My understanding is that my spouse should have been seen within 3 months. So it has been 3 years of watching their health decline, including their mental health, due to the pain, unable to hear, their quality of life is suffering.

I understand that COVID impacted services, but I feel this is not good enough!

Could you please let me know when they might be booked for surgery, as when we ring the Outpatients we just get told they are waiting to be seen.

Dear bonanzaqc39,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your concerns about the length of time it has taken you and your spouse to be referred to an ENT specialist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) for surgery. I am so sorry to hear that your spouse’s health, mental health and quality of life has declined due to the pain and hearing impact.

I understand that waiting for surgery can be an anxious and stressful time. SCGH strives to see patients within their allotted Category (within 90 days in your spouse’s case as a Category 2 patient). After investigation, I can see that the current wait times for this type of surgery are unfortunately longer than expected. I am sorry that this wait time has been significantly delayed for your spouse.

This type of feedback is taken very seriously. To provide an individualised investigation and response, I invite you or your spouse to contact the Consumer Liaison Service on 64572867 or email CLS@health.wa.gov.au so that we can look into surgery dates.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
