"My daughter's traumatic birth experience"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Maternity

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was due to have her first baby a few years ago, she was induced and finally gave birth on the following day. I being her parent was with her in the birthing suite the whole time. She was so good going through the contractions and breathing well , not even yelling or screaming

By the time baby was ready to move, she was in so much pain her body went into shock which was delaying the birth, midwife realised it was becoming a bit of an emergency so they decided to maybe give her a caesarean, that decision was soon turned to having an epidural… it was the most traumatic experience I have ever witnessed, the nurse used the forcepts and seemingly reefed that baby out like there was no tomorrow..leaving my daughter torn in all directions, having a major prolapse! I believe she has been stitched  up incorrectly and her lady bits are on the outside still to this day !!

I feel she needs to get this fixed as her self confidence is not good. I felt I needed to reach out in the hope she can get some help as I know she cannot go on this way , she doesn’t want to make waves and has been putting up with this for 3 yrs now .. her local GP is saying she just needs to lose some weight and the prolapse will be corrected in time , but how can that be so when she has been seemingly wrongly stitched up with half of her insides hanging out ..can someone please help us ..it hurts me as her parent to see her so depressed

Dear Nogoto,

Thank you for reaching out and taking the time to tell us about your daughter’s birth experience while in our care.

I am sorry to hear of the ongoing impact this is having on your daughter, and on you as her mother. I know that when a labour and birth do not go as expected or planned, it can have long-lasting effects both physically and emotionally.

I am concerned about the details you have given about the delivery, including the tearing and prolapse that is still a problem for your daughter now, several years later. I want to investigate this further and support your daughter to receive the care she needs.

I am the Head of Department for Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Bunbury Hospital and, along with the Midwifery Manager, I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with your daughter, and you, to discuss the concerns. I also want to let you know that if your daughter wants you to speak on her behalf, we will need her written consent to release any confidential information from her healthcare record.

If you are happy to meet or if you would prefer a telephone call first, please email swfeedback@health.wa.gov.au or telephone 08 6753 6537 where you can leave the details for us to get in touch.

I hope we hear from you soon.

Kind regards

Lauren Megaw
