"Birth of first child"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Antenatal Clinic, Birth Suite, Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, Wards 3B, 3C, 3D, 3DO, Visiting Midwife Service

(as the patient),

It was a stressful period where I had to travel 400km and stay in Perth during the weeks leading up to the birth. I had daily monitoring at Fiona Stanley as my baby had intrauterine growth restriction.

I found this difficult as I spoke to many different midwives, doctors and specialist and every person had a different view on the care for my unborn baby. After the cesearean we got told they were going to discharge us at 5pm even though we lived 400km away and did not have accommodation suitable for a newborn. I am extremely grateful to the midwife and mental health team who advocated on our behalf to ensure this didn't happen, but overall found it very disappointing that they thought that was going to be okay for a first time mum who had a baby with a very low birth weight. It was a very stressful time period for us.

Dear vulpeculaek78,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby! It sounds like it didn’t go exactly to plan, but it was nice to hear how grateful you were for the midwife and social worker who advocated for you regarding your discharge. Unfortunately, due to the activity in the maternity department discharges do tend to occur late in the afternoon, and it would have been an oversight that the staff did not realise that you lived so far away. The Coordinator of Nursing has ensured staff will be re-educated and reminded on confirming all appropriate information before organising late discharges from ward. I apologise for any miscommunication and confusion that occurred and wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
