"Hand surgery"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / 2 West & Hand Clinic

(as the patient),

I had a surgery late last year at Sydney Hospital (this was to insert rods in my right hand). This was not a pleasant experience as in excruciating pain. Nursing staff tried to help and give pain relief (as I was vomiting it up).

Being right handed I felt there was no support suggested as i need home care I live alone and I am right handed. I was meant to have surgery a fortnight ago but tried to call the hospital to re-schedule but couldn't get through. The doctor then called me back and I was re-scheduled to have surgery.

I arrived at the hospital early in the morning. I had been fasting since midnight and still had not had my surgery by late afternoon. I checked with nursing staff throughout the day as to when my surgery might happen but was not given a clear time frame. I sat for around 9 hours.

My back was sore and I was in pain and extremely worried.

I saw all the other people go in for surgery that I believe had come in after me.

I then was told it may possibly be that I'll probably be released from surgery at 12.00 am by a complaints manager. This had happened previously and I was assured it was only a half hour surgery as I had forwarded my concerns to the Dr in relation to the surgery.

I was very concerned about my dogs (who were at home) as I live alone and was worried about who would feed them if my surgery ran too late. Because I couldn't get clarification on when or if my surgery would happen I felt that I had to leave the hospital
