"My experience as a Day patient"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

I recently visited Busselton Hospital as a day patient for a minor procedure. The staff I saw were lovely and very helpful & supportive. My only issue was when I returned to recovery, I woke to hear voices in the next bed space saying "ok she's crashed.. what do we do now?" .. I have to add at this point that I'm a clinician... I was just about to panic thinking it could be me, and why don't they know what to do..... when I heard the very familiar 'click click click'.. of the resusci-annie doll as the 'person' was given CPR. When I realised what was going on, (which being immediately post-op did take a bit longer than usual) I can't tell you the relief, but had I not been a clinician, I feel I would have been extremely panicked !.. I strongly suggest that if BLS training has to be done in recovery, please don't do it when there's a patient in the next bed!

I did mention it to the nurse caring for me, but all they did was pull the curtain a bit more .. which I felt didn't help at all!

Dear triangulumpk34,

Thank you for your feedback on your recent visit to Busselton Health Campus Day Surgery.

It certainly must have been a surprise for you to wake to the sound of a resuscitation. Please know that we do not normally undertake BLS training in the recovery room. Unfortunately this particular day we were completing validations for our theatre team and the most appropriate space to facilitate this was to be near theatres for ease of access.

Please know that I did speak to the staff involved and they assured me that they informed all of the following patients that there was training happening in the area and not to be concerned. We are very sorry that this was not communicated to you prior to your procedure and that you felt panic during your recovery.

If you would like to speak further please feel free to contact me on 97536162.
