"Emergency care for my child"

About: Geraldton Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

Was at ER early on a public holiday morning for my child who had an accident. Must of just been at shift change because the nurse who came to us once we were triaged and rushed straight in left pretty quickly and another came in to introduce themself. There was also a student nurse.

I witnessed the nurse speaking, I felt, pretty condescendingly to the student nurse, like they were annoyed at their presence on more than one occasion and when they came check on things I had to explain some of the things to the nurse that were already done & the nurse was going to do again, didn’t look at the chart.

The nurse then went to take blood & I advised that my child was dehydrated, hadn’t eaten & just had trauma and never had a blood test before so the nurse may find it hard & If they were finding it hard to please stop. Then nurse just said yep and proceeded to start.

I then told them twice more to please stop as I feel they were digging the needle all over the place & my child was in tears. The nurse just kept saying yes but kept going. I then had to say with urgency in my voice to stop as I believe they weren’t getting anything. Then the nurse walked away with the needle still sticking out of my child’s arm.

I then witnessed the nurse making silly gestures to another nurse like a child that has just been told off would. I’m not sure if they were having a bad day or what but they don’t seem like they are in the right line of work for their maturity level. Even as we left my partner & I both thanked the nurse anyway and they didn’t even bother to look up though I know they heard me as I was standing right next to them.

Now to the Dr Daniel (I think that’s his name) I felt he was the most amazing, gentle & kind Dr I have ever come across. I believe he could see our child was a mess and I felt did everything to make my child feel comfortable & cared for. Careful not to add to the trauma we had just experienced. I felt he was so good and I was so grateful to have him there.

I felt the student nurse was also lovely and very gentle & caring too. And in my opinion the orderly that took us to X-ray was amazing too!

I’ve never, not once had a bad or distasteful experience at the GRH ER & in my experience everyone has always been absolutely amazing so I was sad to have a sour taste this time but I felt I was made up for by the amazing Dr.

Thankyou Dr Daniel!

Dear PublicHolidayEmergency

Thank you for sharing you experience on Care Opinion.

I was disappointed to read of the negative impact the nurse had on yourself and your child during your presentation to the Geraldton Hospital. Your description of the events does not reflect the sensitive and compassionate care our nursing team strive to achieve. I would be grateful if you would consider speaking with me so I can better understand your experience and from there I can ensure we can support the nurse, allowing them to have some reflection on the way they provided the care. Our goal is to ensure that any consumer, including children and their parents, are treated appropriately and respectfully. My name is Jody Rolston and I am the Regional Patient Safety and Quality Manager. I can be contacted on 9956 2217, or if your prefer email Jody.Rolston@health.wa.gov.au

I was very pleased to read that your other interactions were of the high standard. Dr Daniel is a valuable member of the Emergency Department team and I will ensure his excellent work treating your child and de-escalating a difficult situation are appropriately acknowledged. I will share your feedback with the nursing and patient services team so they can also acknowledge the great work their team members did in supporting you both.

I do hope your child has recovered from their accident and once again thank you for sharing your story and I hope to hear from you.

Regards

Jody Rolston
