"Abrupt clinical nurse"

About: Wheatbelt Health

(as the patient),

My partner and I spent 9 days on holiday recently which was amazing however on the day we were leaving it was raining quite heavily which meant the floors in the unit got wet

As a result I slipped, landed heavily on my left foot which bent the wrong way as I went down. I knew immediately it was broken as I heard the crack.

The pain was excruciating so I took 2 Panadol and 2 anti inflammatory tablets. As a Nurse manager myself I was fully aware of the steps I should take and the repercussions of my fall, this led me to attend the local health centre. My partner requested a wheelchair as I was in too much pain to walk, of which one was provided. On entering the department there were two people waiting. As the triage nurse came out to accompany one of the patient’s through to the back of the department, I recall the clinical nurse stated abruptly that they’re aware of me and will deal with me shortly. My partner told them how much pain I was in and I recall the nurse stated that there are only two nurses , no doctors and all they can give me is Panadol and ibuprofen. I felt the nurse was very aggressive and abrupt in that communication towards us. I informed them I had already taken some and they said well that’s all they can do and they’ve already told me there’s only two nurses with no doctors and I’ll have to Telehealth a doctor.

At this the nurse went back behind the locked door. I was in disbelief at the way the nurse spoke to us, especially as I recall one of the waiting patient’s stated that “the nurse’s not known for their nice personality and communication but they’re a good nurse”. As a nurse manager myself I would be horrified if that’s the communities opinion of my staff towards the parents. I told my partner to take me home and take me to another hospital’s ED. The CN came out with a registration form and I informed them I was leaving to go home to another hospital. I recall the nurse looked at me and stated, what to another hospital!!! The nurse then said for them to put a bandage on but I had already lost confidence in them and refused. The nurse looked at me and in what I felt was a condescending way and aggressively said, and you’re a nurse!! Then seemingly rolled their eyes and walked away. I couldn’t wait to get out of there and began the 5 hour journey home. I appreciate rural and remote health centres are limited in what they can provide but decent courtesy and kindness costs nothing.

Dear funnynb64

I absolutely agree! Courtesy and Kindness costs nothing and I was very disappointed to read your feedback concerning the poor behaviour and communication of the nurse involved.

The health centre has the capabilities to access an experience telehealth doctor to support the nurses in your assessment and treatment and I am sorry this did not occur.

It is unacceptable and I apologise for this poor behaviour and the added inconvenience of you travelling to another hospital for your required treatment.

Thank you for taking the time to bring the matter to my attention. I would very much like to bring this incident to the attention of the health centre manager and to raise it at the next nurses meeting. I would welcome you to call me on 9690 1310 to discuss further.

I hope you are on the road to recovery from your nasty injury.

Best wishes

Trenton
