"Refusing my child"

About: Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Wisdom tooth broken away on the weekend in the morning. Severe pain and couldn’t get into public dentist. Advice given to present to Qe2 Jubilee ED department. Triaged and waited to see doctor.

Nurse reviewed my child & said it’s only dental pain and that my child needed to see dentist. My child asked to see a doctor so they could get something for the pain. However the nurse said no they didn’t need to see a doctor and gave them a list of dentists to call in the morning.

My child also wanted to ask how they go about getting into the public dentist as they have limited funds.  I contacted the hospital and they said to represent to the ED department if they wanted however this is a huge cost after just returning home.

Since when has a nurse been able to refuse a patient to see a doctor, as I believe happened here. Is the nurse able to make a diagnosis without reviewing the area of concern?
