I was quite upset with what I felt was the unprofessionalism of the nursing staff at the POW emergency reception and triage in the morning recently. My first negative experience was while I was being triaged. One staff member (who I assume was just commencing their shift) walked through into the area I was getting triaged in and with absolutely no acknowledgement of me (or the pain I was in) proceeded to vent about their morning to another nurse who was triaging me. To their credit, however, the nurse triaging me also seemed quite confused by this.
Secondly, each nurse I saw at the reception came across to me as very cold and quite rude towards patients. The final reason which pushed me to write a complaint was observing the nurses sitting in the front reception area (on full display of all the patients in the emergency room) laughing, sitting on the desks and seemingly almost 'relaxing' (about 8 or so of them) like they were having a coffee date and catching up with friends.
In my opinion, this almost came across dehumanising as there was seemingly a complete disregard for what this looked like from the patient perspective because each patient was to me, obviously in pain (one even in the corner vomiting).
I believe they were obviously failing to 'read the room'. Being on break and chatting in the breakroom is one thing, but in my opinion, openly 'catching up' and gasbagging at the reception desk is another and I feel came across as extremely unprofessional (especially in conjunction with the points mentioned above.) I felt it came across that each patient was a bit of an inconvenience - which was the last thing I felt like experiencing early in the morning and in significant pain.
