"Quick and speedy treatment in ED"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

A few weeks ago, I was on holiday in the Wheatbelt Region and on my last day while packing up I unfortunately slipped on the wet floor and sustained in a fracture to my foot. I presented to the local health campus but was met with an uncooperative abrupt clinical nurse who was not very helpful or compassionate.

As a result, I told my husband to take me back to the car to drive five hours home to be able to present to Busselton emergency department. The drive seemed to go on for ever but I was safe in the knowledge that I would get the care that I needed at Busselton Hospital.

On arriving at the department, there was a person in the waiting room that was being very verbal and aggressive towards one of the nurses I felt safe in the knowledge that we were not going to be harmed because the nurse dealt with this patient very professionally and informed them that being aggressive towards the staff would not change the situation and that they would do their best to try and meet their needs as fast as they could. This resulted in the patient, then calming down and taking a seat in the waiting room.

Thankfully I didn’t have to wait too long before I was taken to fast track to be assessed by Dr Matt. The department was extremely busy. However, he took the time to examine me and then advise me that I would need an x-ray to confirm the break in my foot. He personally escorted me to the x-ray department and I was quickly seen and x-rayed and then take him back to fast track, the X-ray confirmed what I already knew that I had sustained quite a nasty fracture to my fifth metatarsal. The nurse, Camille quickly put a Cam boot on me to stabilise my foot as well as provide me with a pair of crutches and Education on post fracture care. The doctor also advised me that he would contact the fracture clinic who would then follow up my care the following week.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the nurses doctors and staff I dealt with of Busselton emergency department for all the hard work that they do during some challenging times

You are amazing!!!!!!

Dear funnynb64,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback.

I'm sorry to hear that you injured yourself on holidays. Equally it's unfortunate that you had the experience you described at the other health campus. I can imagine this would not have been very pleasant for you and your husband.

Unfortunately, Emergency Departments often see people when they are not at their best. Staff are encouraged to be empathetic.

It sounds like the staff at the Busselton Health Campus made all efforts to help you during this time.

We are extremely fortunate to have wonderful staff here at the Busselton Health Campus. I'm pleased to hear that we were able to help turn a negative experience into a more positive experience.

I hope you have a speedy recovery and want you to know I will pass on your feedback to the staff.

Kind regards,

Troy Stirzaker | A/Clinical Nurse Manager
