"Distasteful paediatric appointment"

About: Hedland Health Campus / Outpatients

(as a parent/guardian),

I attended a Paediatric appointment with my teenage child. I had my younger child and my toddler in tow.

The beginning of the appointment was ok, the paediatrician had spoken to my child about the outcome of the asthma trial they had undertaken. But then when the paediatrician started discussing my child’s background and what the current routine surrounding sleep etc. was, they proceeded to lecture both my teenage child and my younger child about their phone usage and screen time before bed. The paediatrician went so far as to say that their current routine/habits will shrink their brain. The paediatrician then started on my toddler, whom I had given my phone to so as to occupy them during the appointment, so they were not being disruptive; I recall stating that they have been on that phone since they walked in. My toddler is very talkative and would have made a nuisance of themselves and been disruptive had I not pre-empted keeping them occupied. The paediatrician then proceeded to try and prove their point about brain shrinkage by googling brain shrinkage and used an article on the affects Alzheimer’s has on your brain function as their argument.

This paediatrician has never consulted my child before and has no idea about their history or their routines, bar from what they were told in those two minutes of conversation. I also point out that my child is a teenager and is not very good at communicating or explaining things.

I find it disgraceful that this paediatrician can use those two minutes of conversation as justification to lecture my children and in the same instance indirectly lecture me as their parent.

Dear lynxjc38

I’m sorry to hear of your recent experience whilst seeking care for your child at Hedland Health Campus. It is understandable that you felt upset and concerned about the interaction you have described. I want to assure you that your experience is not reflective of the standard of care or the values we expect staff to demonstrate while providing healthcare. I sincerely apologise that this was your experience.

I am aware you have also provided your concerns via our consumer feedback email address. We will be in contact to invite you to discuss your concerns with the Senior Medical Officer and myself so we can work together to address them. I look forward to meeting with you in the near future.

Kind regards

Roger Golling
