"My mother passed away after a long illness"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Emergency Department Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Respiratory Medicine G54

(as a parent/guardian),

Thanks so much for the opportunity to provide feedback.  I am really keen that our recent experience in SCGH emergency department and in ward G54 are recorded.

My mother had a chronic health condition, COPD, for some time.  She recently experienced a fall which precipitated an emergency admission to SCGH.  Mum had limited capacity to respond so my sister and I were consulted regarding her immediate care.  This consultation was respectful and clear, including my Mum where possible.  My sister and I were both able to hear and see everything happening to Mum so we were able to reassure and comfort her even though we were unsure of her prognosis.  Her nursing care was exceptional with nursing staff interacting with Mum as far as they were able and making us feel as comfortable as possible.

We were transferred to ward G54 under Dr Fiona.  This was a smooth and well organised transition.

Dr Fiona and Dr Isla were extremely knowledgeable, thoughtful and caring, establishing goals of care with us and involving us in every decision, paying careful attention to information provided by us.  Nursing and nursing assistant staff in G54 were equally considerate, knowledgeable and compassionate, keen to understand and respond to any evidence of patient distress.

Mum passed away peacefully with both of us in attendance.  We were grateful to be able to respond to Mum's periods of alertness and provide calm reassurance as we had all the information we needed to be sure that each decision made was based on the best evidence available.

Thanks again to both medical practitioners in ward G54 and congratulations to SCGH for supporting such a high calibre of medical practitioner, nursing and nursing assistant staff, resulting in our experience of quality medical care.

Dear Qualitycare,

On behalf of Sir Charles Gairdner hospital, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to you and your family on the passing of your mother.

Thank you so much for your heartfelt words of thanks and appreciation for your mum’s care and treatment in the Emergency Department and on ward G54 during the end of her journey.

It is a privilege to be in a position to care and support people and their loved ones, at such intimate stages in their lives. I am pleased to hear that staff did their utmost to make your mother as comfortable as possible and to ensure you and your sister had the opportunity to spend precious time with her.

It is never an easy thing when our loved ones leave and our hope always, is that it will be peaceful and surrounded by our loved ones.

To read your words describing the compassion and kindness shown to you and your sister at such a difficult time was heart-warming.

I know all the staff involved will be extremely proud and honoured to know how much their care and support was appreciated, and the recognition provided.

Once again please accept our condolences and we wish you and your family all the very best.

Warm regards

Dr George Eskander

A/Executive Director, SCGOPHCG
