"Ortho appointment"

About: Broome Health Campus / Specialist Outpatients

(as the patient),

I have been seeing different ortho specialists for a few months now as I have torn my ACL. I have been getting an MRI, CT etc to determine if I need surgery. I recently had a phone consultant with a doctor and found them to be very blunt and rude. I recall they constantly interrupted me while I was talking, and I found them to be very unsympathetic to my situation.

I understand they would have lots of patients to see, however their apparent stand-offish behaviour has only made me more anxious for surgery. I recall they decided that a phone consultant wasn't going to work (shouldn't that have been decided before the appointment started) and quickly ended the call saying I would see them next time they are back, which is in a few months... I ended the appointment more confused than when I started and felt I was not being heard. I feel very disappointed

Dear octansxj65,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of your recent experiences with the visiting orthopaedic service via telephone.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the interaction not being conducted in the manner we would wish and that you have been left feeling disappointed with the service.

It is true that some conditions require in person assessment to properly decide the best path of action.

It is also true that different clinicians have different opinions on what can be assessed over the phone and what cannot.

However, it is hard to comment on specific cases without knowing more detail.

My name is David Woodward and I am the Senior Medical Officer for Broome Hospital.

I would be very happy to talk to you further and can be contacted on 0419 196 947 or david.woodward@health.wa.gov.au.

I would hope this would assist with being able to further discuss your case with our orthopaedic lead and offer further advice from there.

Regards

Dave Woodward
