"Care received at the hospital"

About: Sale Hospital / Emergency Department Sale Hospital / Medical Imaging

(as the patient),

Having Parkinsons disease for 17 years I frequently fall even when simply standing. On this occasion I hit a steel rod with the left side of my head resulting in bleeding and my carers insistence I visit A&E. Triage assessed it as low priority so I waited nearly 7 hours to be seen by Dr Esthar (sp?).

Very shortly afterwards she arranged to get a CT which revealed mild bleeding in my brain. She also stitched the cut on my head prior to admitting me for observation. None of this was the fault of the staff who I felt excelled despite the apparent inadequacy of their working conditions.

I was discharged 2 days later and will review with my GP. It seemed to me the 7 hour wait was due to inadequate staffing levels and a busy A&E. I recall there were several children waiting for attention so I understood why I had to wait.  Apparently there were issues with equipment condition too.

Nurses.

It was after midnight when I arrived at Medical Ward. The 2 nurses on duty were patient, thorough and in remarkably good humour (Names both beginning with "D").

During the night they checked on me several times and I felt I was in good hands. Whilst all of the nurses were excellent one of them, (Shelley) left a hand written note - a quote from Mark Twain, which was much appreciated.  It is a shame I did not get a chance to  thank her.

As I had not suspected I would be admitted, I omitted to bring my Parkinsons medication. I was surprised that the hospital did not have one of my normal PD drugs  (Sifrol 4.5). Even the following day pharmacy were only able to supply Sifrol 0.25

What has to be done to get this small regional hospital the funding I believe it requires in order to service our rapidly increasing population. When I moved here many years ago I recall the hospital even then was seemingly not able to adequately service a population half it's current size.

Scores, in my opinion.

Nurses 10/10

Radiology 10/10

Doctors 10/10

General staff 9/10

Staffing level 5/10

Equipment 8/10

Facilities 6/10

Food 5/10

With thanks
