"Lack of MRI"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Recently I fell from my attic and my partner called an ambulance. I was taken to Royal Perth hospital where a doctor did a CT-scan and an x-ray, I asked if they were going to do an MRI but the doctor told me that everything was fine and I was then sent home.

A week later I was eating at a restaurant and suddenly I couldn’t even hold a spoon without dropping it. A doctor who happened to be at the restaurant advised me to immediately go to the emergency room. After going to another hospital I was checked by a doctor there who checked me out and then told me to get an MRI through my GP. The MRI revealed that I had a subdural hematoma and am now undergoing surgery to take care it. Due to what I feel was the negligence of the initial doctor my condition has worsened.

Dear libraqj77

I was very sorry to hear of your significant fall requiring admission to the Royal Perth Hospital Emergency Department (RPH ED). This must have been a very worrying time for you and your partner.

Patients that present to the ED following a fall and injury to the head are routinely x-rayed with follow up CT scan. It was concerning therefore to read of your deterioration a week later which required you to seek further medical attention. A senior clinical member of the ED team has assured me that it is unusual for abnormalities of this nature not to show up on a CT scan. From the information we have available, it is therefore not routine practice to arrange further imaging with an MRI if no concerns were flagged on the initial CT scan. Nonetheless, I would like to acknowledge the distress you and your partner experienced on being informed of this new diagnosis.

It is difficult to investigate and comment further on your particular case without knowing your details, and I invite you to contact the Consumer Engagement Unit on 9224 1637 from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday or email: RPBG.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au. so that we can conduct a thorough review of the tests and results carried out during your ED admission.

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion, so that we can learn and improve the care we deliver to our patients and the community.

I sincerely wish you all the best with your continuing healthcare journey and recovery.

Kind regards
