"Respecting our nurses"

About: St George Hospital / 5 West Cardiology

(as a service user),

My parent was in St George Public Hospital as they had a procedure. They stayed in 5W cardiology for a bit, the nurses were very knowledgeable and driven. The heart doctors were not bad either. My parent ended up having a major surgery and came across a doctor. I believe they were from the cardio thoracic team. I can’t remember if it was in 5South or when my parent was in intensive care, but I recall this doctor came in and I could not believe how seemingly rude they were to the nurse looking after my parent. I felt the doctor was so patronising, condescending and on a power trip. I recall they didn’t make any eye contact with the nurse when talking to them and had this attitude where I felt they thought they knew it all. It seemed to me the nurse ended up being right about the issue, I can’t remember what was happening as I was quite stressed seeing my parent in the state they were in. I felt that I needed to post this because it was so atrocious to me and the nurse seemed so overwhelmed with providing care for my parent.

In my opinion, this is a key example that we need more respect and acknowledgment for our nursing staff.

Dear aquilawp74,

Thankyou for taking the time to give feedback on your recent experience at St George Hospital.

I was pleased to hear your positive feedback for 5 West, and your particular recognition for the nurses across 5 West, 5 South and ICU. We are very fortunate to have many staff working at St George Hospital who are committed to providing quality healthcare to our patients.

I was sorry to read your feedback about the behaviour of one of our medical staff and their interaction with one of our nursing staff.

Your feedback will be provided to our staff and their line managers to both celebrate the great work and how the nursing staff cared for your parent, and to remind other staff how their behaviour can be perceived as disrespectful.

Once again, thankyou for sharing your positive experience with us and also the feedback for improving the respect our staff demonstrate to each other.

Best wishes,

Ange Karooz

General Manager
