"High Risk Birth"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Antenatal Clinic, Birth Suite, Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, Wards 3B, 3C, 3D, 3DO, Visiting Midwife Service

(as a service user),

I have been transferred from my local hospital for the birth of my third baby due to complications. I was happy with this as I have birthed my previous two babies at Fiona Stanley Hospital and had great experiences each time.

I have a history of Pre Eclampsia in my previous two pregnancies, high blood pressure and precipitous labor. During this pregnancy, I have been having serial growth scans which has shown that my baby’s growth is not consistent and is declining. My most recent scan has shown my baby’s abdominal circumference has dropped to the 10th centile, while their overall weight has, again, dropped to the 10th centile. I have needed to attend the Armadale Assessment Unit twice due to reduced movements.

The doctor I spoke to at my first appointment at Fiona Stanley Hospital since being transferred explained to me that no intervention is the best. While I do agree with this in healthy pregnancies, I do not feel this is the case in my situation. The doctor went on to explain the risks of stillbirth with mothers who have high blood pressure and the longer they stay in. This has confused me as to why my induction date is being put off until I am 39 weeks and 3 days. Additionally, I have a history of precipitous labor and I am worried that putting my induction off until I am so far along in the pregnancy will see me go into spontaneous labor, in which case I believe I will not make it to the hospital in time to birth my baby, putting both me and my baby at more of a risk.

I do not feel that the doctor has completely taken into consideration my history and current complications. I want what is best for me and my unborn child and unfortunately I do not feel that putting my induction off until so late into the pregnancy is what is best for us.

I would really appreciate a second opinion on this decision the doctor has made. I have emailed a ‘concern’ through to FSH Feedback, however I am unsure which Avenue I will receive the quickest response, hence posting here too.

Dear saturnkr55,

I am sorry to read of your complications, but I’d like to thank you for reaching out to me via Care Opinion with such a clear and measured post.

Normally I would ask you to contact our Patient and Family Liaison team to provide your details, however they have alerted me that you have already done this, and you have had a review with one of our Consultant Obstetricians. I understand you have a birth plan that you are now comfortable with.

Thank you again for reaching out. I wish you the very best with the arrival of your newest addition to your family.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
