"Broken ankle treatment"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

The worst visit I have ever had to the Bunbury Emergency. Triage was quick as it seemed there was hardly anyone there, was sent through to fast track as I needed X-rays. From there 2 different drs came out and asked me personal questions ie when my last period was (in front of other patients) was then brought through - not to a cubicle but to another set of seats in the hallway. After watching people walk past continuously as if I wasn’t there, I finally asked someone if they knew when I would be going to xray (during this time still no pain relief).

Finally went to xray and then back to the bench where I couldn’t even elevate my foot… still no pain killers after having to move my foot in all directions for the X-ray… 6 hours later I got told it was broken, no checks were done on the tendons or ligaments (couldn’t and still can’t see my ankle bone) got told I needed a full moon boot, only hang on, we don’t have one in your size so we will just put a compression bandage on…. Right you're good to go see you later…. Still nothing for the pain but I felt it was a kick in the butt! Felt like I was worthless… felt worse leaving than when I went in :-(

Dear pilingskp56

I am very sorry for the distressing and painful visit that you experienced at our Emergency Department.

Specifically, I'm sorry for the lack of sensitivity you experienced and lack of pain relief, and that you felt the examination of your foot and ankle was inadequate.

I would be very grateful if you could contact our feedback team (swfeedback@health.wa.gov.au) to make a specific complaint so that I can listen to your story and improve our care.

Yours sincerely,

Steve Hartwig

Head of Department, Emergency Medicine
