"Kindness goes a long way"

About: St John of God Subiaco Hospital

(as the patient),

Recently I went in for surgery to have a complete hysterectomy due to tumour cells being detected. It was a very overwhelming experience which I was extremely emotional and teary about.

I wanted to shout out 3 staff members who really acknowledged my vulnerabilities and truly made me feel cared for, not just that they were performing their job.

A talk young man (possibly called Felix?) was my porter who wheeled me down into the surgery wait area. He was so incredibly sweet and gentle with me seeing I was crying and really made me feel safe. He acknowledged that I was scared and assured me that I was going to be well cared for. Thank you.

In the surgery wait area a nurse called Maria sat with me, acknowledged my feelings and the surgery, made me laugh and really made me feel not so alone. I am so so grateful for her kindness. It made a world of difference having her there with me. Thank you.

The blonde anaesthetic nurse who brought me into theatre (maybe Narelle?? Not sure), was so kind and gentle with me, knowing how vulnerable I felt and although I was still teary she made me feel completely safe and that I would be cared for.  She held my arm and warmed me on the table whilst we waited for the surgeon. I don't know if I could have done it as well without these three.

Although they were all doing their job. I really felt seen by these three, that I was a frightened woman who needed care and that they really wanted to help me through this experience. I am so so grateful for their kindness. Thank you so much.
