"My relative’s mental health"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My relative had been constantly struggling with their mental health, but refused to go to the hospital because the triage system takes so long and they get overwhelmed with the noise and commotion.

My relative had been expressing that they were highly suicidal and I was extremely concerned.

I finally got them to agree to visit the hospital with me and after the standard compulsory wait period we got to talk with a psychologist. I explained the situation and was told there wasn’t much they could do. I said to the psychologist that I was afraid if I took my relative back to their house without some sort of help that I was afraid they might take their life. I recall the psychologist did a half laugh and said that my relative won’t do that. This angered me so I said “you may find it funny, but I lost my relative's sibling to suicide 2 years ago".

They said they didn't find it funny, I asked “why did you laugh then?”, they said this discussion is over and told us to leave as they walked out.

As I walked out I passed the nurses station and asked if I could get the psychologist's name as I intended to make a complaint about our treatment. The nurse said after the way you acted in there I won’t be giving you any details about the psychologist for security purposes, then asked me to leave before they called security.

I was in a state of disbelief, I felt I hadn’t raised my voice or spoken in a threatening manner in any way. After a few seconds of trying to work out what was going on in my head I looked back towards the nurse who was looking at me with the phone in their hand. We left, and never returned.

I know it must sound like we did something wrong, something disruptive or abusive that I’m leaving out, but no, that is how I was treated while trying to access help for my relative.

This has left me feeling completely let down by this hospital, and still very annoyed if I’m being honest.

Dear vegadn68

I am so sorry to hear about your experience in our Emergency Department (ED). It takes a lot of courage to seek help when we feel vulnerable and I am sorry and concerned that you and your relative had this experience. I am also very concerned for your relative and the need for them to receive appropriate care.

I would strongly encourage you and your relative to return to the ED so that we can review their care needs. If you are not comfortable returning to ED, can you please call our feedback line on 9753 6537 and provide your contact details. I will then be able to call you to discuss other options to access care for your relative, as well as investigate your complaint more fully to ensure that you and other patients and their families do not have a similar experience in the future.

I look forward to hearing from you.
