"My mum’s brain cancer"

About: Kalamunda Hospital / Palliative Care Service

(as a relative),

“Respect from Room 12”

by The Awoken Poet

For all of us

It will come to pass

The end of life

One day

Some traumatically

Drawn out

Others simply

Slip quietly away

In the Kalamunda

Palliative care ward

It’s a sad

Unquestionable

Fact

With camaraderie

Among

The visitors

Like some

Unwritten

Pact

The playing field

Is level

For those

In the beds

For the families

Returning

All the while

The amazing staff

Keeping the wheels

Turning

The sudden

Daily sight

Of brand new

Empty beds

Would turn many

Broken hearted

Inside out

Upon their heads

But the nurses

The doctors

Ancillary staff

Continue regardless

With a kind word

A friendly smile

Knowing

The inevitable

Is coming soon

All the while

I salute

All the staff

With many thanks

And endless praise

For helping

And caring

For my mum

Right through

Her final days

You are

The true heroes

Of coping

Assisting

Those with deep sadness

They are going through

Truly

Respectfully

Held in hand

My hat

Is off

To you

xx

Dear The Awoken Poet,

I am so sorry for your loss.

Thank you for such a beautiful poem about the care we provided to you and your mum at Kalamunda before her passing.

It was heart-warming to read such eloquent prose and to note the kind words and friendly smiles from our staff.

Our staff have been so moved by your words and the thoughtful manner in which they have been conveyed.

I really appreciate you reaching out at such a difficult time.

Kind Regards,

Neil Cowan

Update posted by The Awoken Poet (a relative)

Thank you so much, Neil.

There are so many people who are obviously overwhelmed with the reason they are there.

Credit for the fabulous staff is so often forgotten or neglected.

I wrote it sitting next to my Mum’s bed the day before she died and simply had to read it to a few of the staff before we left the following morning after Mum had lost the battle.

Both my Dad and I have nothing but the utmost respect for everyone and everything they do.

Very best regards,

The Awoken Poet
