"Absolutely terrible food"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus

(as the patient),

I was in Kalgoorlie hospital for two weeks and can honestly say in that time I had two meals I consider edible. Most meals that are served are either wrong or they only give half or less of what is ordered. At the time of writing this story, I am in for an injury and have no dietary restrictions whatsoever. The first night I was served a reasonably nice beef casserole with decent mashed potato but couldn't eat the vegetables as they were, in my opinion, so overcooked they were basically brown mush. A couple of days ago I had a really lovely lasagne which I would have happily eaten several days in a row.

I feel every other meal has been almost inedible and at one point it was so bad that I went 36 hours without eating because the food was so bad. Tonight it got so bad that I ordered sandwiches because surely they would at least be OK, right? I feel sandwiches aren't hard to make. I was served a very small sandwich that was wet in the middle like someone had poured water on it and so stale on the edges it was like slow cooked toast. The contents of the sandwich were a small amount of shredded lettuce and a tiny bit of grated carrot and that was it. This is supposed to be my main meal.

In my two weeks in hospital where I was supposed to be recovering I consumed less calories than what I understand a normal healthy adult is recommended to eat in 48 hours. So for the 13th out of 14 nights I was once again going to bed extremely hungry with no other options.

In my opinion, absolutely disgusting way to treat someone who is supposed to be being looked after and assisted in their recovery. At this point in all honesty even if I had a broken leg I would rather drive myself the 600+ Km to attend a Perth hospital than spend another night here.

Dear Hungry1

Thank you for reaching out and taking the time to let us know about your recent admission to Kalgoorlie Health Campus (KHC). It was really difficult to read that you went without food at such a vulnerable time. I sincerely apologise that your stay at KHC was so uncomfortable and we appreciate you voicing your honest opinion.

The kitchen team at KHC work hard to meet the nutritional requirements of all our patients daily. There have been recent changes to the Australian New Zealand Food Safety Standards Code which has resulted in changes in the kitchen. This does not excuse our limited menu options that were available during your stay, however, this will help the kitchen team provide better services as we review meal portion sizes, nutrition and work towards consistent menu options. I will pass on your feedback to our kitchen staff so that we can learn and improve from this.

Our mission is to improve country people’s health and well-being, to care for the sick and to ensure that country communities can access high quality healthcare so if you have any further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Alicia Michalanney, our Director of the Kalgoorlie Health Campus on (08) 9080 5817 or by emailing alicia.michalanney@health.wa.gov.au

I hope that you are healing well from your injury and feeling much better.

Kind regards

Peter Tredinnick
