"Unmanaged rheumatoid pain"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My grandparent had a cortisone injection 18months ago and damaged a nerve. They’ve been on pills and their rheumatoid pain has been manageable. My grandparent then got a skin cancer that needed removal from their leg, they got my grandparent to get off their rheumatoid medication. My grandparent’s pain levels are intolerable and they got back on their medication. Nothing is helping now. My grandparent went to Fiona Stanley Hospital because they’re old and pain is seemingly not a priority. They had my grandparent sit there ten hours then sent them home.

They sent them home with a gee we are sorry and they are in excruciating pain so much so that I could not even have a conversation with them over the phone because them couldn't concentrate on talking because they are hurt too much.

My grandparent is left at home, I believe with the medical staff hands tied, I believe they put them in the too old, too hard basket. My grandparent’s at home sitting there for days with the sensation of a knife stabbed and being twisted in their groin area.

Dear Lion

I am sorry to hear that your grandparent is in so much pain and that they had to wait so long to be seen by a doctor once they presented to the Fiona Stanley Hospital Emergency Department (ED). I appreciate that this must be very frustrating for them given they have had a challenging journey to get to the place of needing to attend the ED for a solution.

Without knowing your grandparent’s name or the date on which they presented to the ED it is difficult to for us to fully understand what happened and what their options are in relation to referral to specialist outpatient services.

I encourage your grandparent to contact our Patient and Family Liaison Office on 6152 4013 (Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 4.30 pm) or via email anytime: FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au. This will enable us to get further details including their personal details and the date and time they presented to the ED so that we can investigate what their discharge plan was.

In the interim I hope that they have made contact with their General Practitioner to get some help in managing their pain.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
