We presented our child in ED recently.
They were quite sick and lethargic, got straight through into ED, there was no doctor on call in ED so the nurses had to call in a telehealth doctor.
The telehealth doctor said where the doctor is on call? There is no doctor the nurses advised. the telehealth doctor advised that there needs to be a doctor present, find a doctor immediately.
Luckily a doctor did manage to come in (so our child could be canulated for IV antibiotics), however since the doctor wasn't able to stay in ED overnight to monitor my child's condition (suspected pneumonia), the telehealth doctor and the doctor present advised we had to be transferred to another hospital to be monitored in case of anything occuring.
The doctors did request for a nurse to accompany my child in the ambulance during transit just in case, the nurses in ED seemed a little hesitant to go, luckily one of the paramedics was a qualified nurse so the doctor called in was happy with that.
With a brand-new hospital, why is there no doctors on call in ED? we were lucky in our scenario (except for being sent off to another hospital) however it petrifies me to think what if there was a major car accident, how would of that been dealt with?
