"Transferred for surgery"

About: Kununurra Hospital / Emergency Department Patient Assisted Travel Scheme - WACHS Kimberley

(as the patient),

Attended Emergency Department at Kununurra Hospital with a broken right arm. The doctors transferred me to metropolitan hospital for surgery. PATS organised for me to fly down on the late afternoon commercial flight arriving in Perth in the evening. There was no pick-up at the airport, I was given a photo of Country Connect staff shirt, Liaison Officer that do transport from airport to the other hospital.

I paid for a taxi to the other hospital, arrived there and staff did not know about my referral. To make things worse I waited until the early hours of the morning for a bed.

PATS did not explain this to me before I left, made me feel very unsafe in a strange place. That afternoon still not sure when my surgery. To Kununurra Hospital, in my opinion this is not good service transferring patients to big hospitals to a unknown place and unfamiliar service to find your own way. This is a bad experience and I hope this does not happen to anyone else.

Hi Notgoodservice,

Thanks very much for your feedback. I hope you are recovering well from your injury now. I am sorry that your already stressful journey was made worse by our communication errors. I understand that when you are travelling from the Kimberley, the journey is a long one and you don't need any delays when you arrive.

I have spoken to our PATS team and they report that the driver was at the airport but was unable to locate you. We need to ensure we have the correct contact details so we can easily find our country patients at the airport.

I also hear that the hospital in Perth did not know of your arrival. I will ensure that we communicate this more thoroughly in future.

Thank you for raising awareness to this issue. Your feedback will help make the journey of other Kimberley residents requiring care in the city more seamless.

Regards,

Trudie Clee

Acting Coordinator of Nursing and Midwifery
