"Bad Treatment"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I recently visited The eye Hospital on Macquarie Street in the City of Sydney in the morning & finished with diagnostics in the afternoon, nearly 5 hours of waiting of various tests & in-between sitting waiting for the test, sometimes more than an hour. It all started with second injection in my eye a few weeks ago, as my left eye was going blind & needed injections for improvement & further spreading of the problem. In the second injection, the first one done a month before. In the second injection the pain in my lasted nearly one week so I felt concerned & I rang emergency in the Eye Hospital & they advised me to go there without any delay & get it all checked. The five hours of wait was only part of the problem, I experienced much more.

On entry the staff member on the desk asked me what is your emergency today. They opened my past record & said to me you have been to St George Hospital (SGH) why are you here. I said I have never been to SGH but they insisted that i have not been there about my eye, infect they found that it was the record of my spouse who was admitted to SGH about in 2021 and died.

About two ears ago my optometrist sent a Fax to the Eye Hospital that my left eye was going blind & I needed immediate attention & I needed be treated at urgently the Hospital. I got letter of my place in waiting list six months later. It was increased by six months  & about two months I went there for check up & found that my left eve was already banded thus I needed junctions, first  was administered on that day. I was told by the doctor I should have given these injections two years ago. Thanks for the discovery two years too late.

The doctor who looked after me recently, told me in the end after 5 hours, there was a wound in my eye due to the last injection & pains in the eye is due to it & it should recover with time, but there was no answer to the delay of two years too long period & the eye is already on the way to blindness. I feel the waiting list, appointments & treatments in the Eye Hospital  are racially biased & prejudiced.

Dear pavokf65,

I sincerely apologise for the poor experiences you had (I.e., long wait in ED, opening different patient record, and our waitlist process), which I would like to address separately.

Could you please contact us through SESLHD-ConsumerFeedback@health.nsw.gov.au, so I could investigate these circumstances further.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Regards,

Dr Pauline Rumma

Director of Clinical Services
