"Breathalizer"

About: Norseman Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I went to our local hospital in Norseman by ambulance after having a fall at home. I was taken to the ED and nursing staff called the Doctor before taking off the dressing on my leg as it was still bleeding through the bandaging.

Whilst I was laying there I was breathalysed without them asking for my consent. It was only mid morning.  A senior clinician was the one who requested it. They didn't even ask if I had been drinking. It was very embarrassing then to make it worse they didn't even give me a look at the results, it was if it was something secret I wasn't allowed to know about. Being a senior citizen I felt as if I was the lowest of low. I believe the nursing staff felt embarrassed also.

Dear puppisjq87

I was sorry to read your story and how this experience made you feel. Often the Doctor may request a breathalyser test to assist in the best treatment for the patient, however, this would normally be explained to the patient, consent would be sought and the patient would be provided with the results. I would hope this was an oversight on the day, I will make contact with the Director of Nursing at the hospital to ensure we remind staff to explain tests and treatment to the patient and family.

Once again thank you for taking the time to share your story, feedback such as this helps us to reflect on the care provided and improve our service. If you would like to follow up with the Director of Nursing please call Luana Barnett on 9039 9200. I do hope that you are on the mend and that your leg is much better.

Kind regards
