"The food served in hospital"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital / DB3S - Cardiothoracic Surgery Ward Prince of Wales Hospital / Emergency Department Prince of Wales Hospital / Medical Imaging Department

(as the patient),

Recently I was admitted via Emergency at POW hospital Randwick.  I had a  lung spontaneous pneumothorax.  All staff I dealt with, from triage to the nurses, to the doctors and orderlies and kitchen staff were wonderful.  I felt completely safe in their hands.  A procedure was done to insert a drain into my side to drain out the excess fluid out of my lung.  I was taken up to the ward at the public Hospital.  All staff were amazing.

What wasn't amazing, in my opinion, was the food.  I feel I actually would not even serve the food to my dog.  When I woke up one morning I was given two slices of white bread and weetbix.  I believe that white bread has no nutritional substance.  I was not able to eat the food due to the amount of preservatives and food colourings.  That night I was served roast Lamb with vegetables, but the plastic wrap with the ingredients had a page of numbers and not, as I believe, ingredients.  I was lucky to have people bring me substitute food, but I feel many are not that lucky.  If I had eaten the food served to me, I believe I would not have recovered.  I found the mashed potato was dry and inedible as it looked to me like it had been left in the sun for a week.

In my opinion, the quality of the food served is not fit for people who are ill or trying to recover from operations. I feel the hospital should be ashamed of itself.  I am a Naturopath and understand the importance of food on gut health but also mental health.  Don't you have dieticians, nutritionists etc who you can work with?

We should be trying to encourage healing.  Food is medicine and without proper nutrients, I feel patients will not be able to recover, recuperate.

Good morning patientconcerned

Thank you for your recent feedback in the Emergency Department and the Cardiothoracic Ward at POWH.

I am glad the nursing and medical care you received from the staff was amazing.

I am sorry the food you were served was not.

I will forward your concerns in regards to your meal quality to HealthShare who are responsible for the meals within POWH, I will also forward to our dietetics department.

Again thank you for the positive feedback with your nursing and medical care and I hope you are recovering well.

Kind regards

Justin O'Hare

Update posted by patientconcerned (the patient)

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately, a senior staff member of Patient Services has replied to me, and I felt basically blamed the quality of the food on the staff and intimating that the staff did not follow established processes and that was the reason for the appalling food quality.

I had replied back to this staff member on the 3/11/2023, but as yet have had no reply, as I find it utterly shocking that it seems the staff should be blamed for such appalling food that is served.

I believe this is a much bigger issue that needs to be addressed. I am happy, as mentioned to 2 staff members that I would be willing to be part of a consumer committee to try to work out a better way forward, that looks at food as medicine to help with patient healing, but as I yet I have not heard back.

Again, thank you for your reply and I reiterate, that I believe the staff (at all levels) are fantastic. Regards patientconcerned.
