"Parent's treatment by doctor"

About: Kondinin Health Service / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My parent has just had a heart attack at home the ambulance was quick to respond and Rachel and Brendon from Kulin SJA were fantastic.  My parent was taken to Kondinin hospital and seen by a Telehealth Dr, my parent was in lots of pain, has a hearing problem so couldn’t really understand or hear what the Dr was saying but was asked if they wanted to go to a local or metro hospital.

My parent has had a bad experience at that particular metro hospital so no way would they have wanted to go there and shouldn’t have been given that option.

My parent said they didn’t want to go to Perth, why was my parent asked this? I feel my parent should have been sent straight to Perth by flying doctors instead, my parent was sent by road to a country hospital and spent hours in there before being sent to Perth.

My parent was exhausted and in lots of pain still.

I know my parent has a do not resuscitate but as soon as I arrived and explained to my parent you will die if you don’t go to Perth my parent thought they should go.

The Kondinin hospital was great nurses were very concerned and told me not to talk just hold my parent’s hand because they could have a massive heart attack unless they were kept quiet.

I feel the Telehealth Doctor let us down by not sending my parent by flying Dr ASAP. When they rang me and said what are my parent’s wishes because my parent said they didn’t want to go to Perth. I said did you tell my parent they will die if they don’t go, the doctor said no I didn’t tell your parent  that I suggested they needed to. The doctor also asked me if I wanted my parent to go to the metro  hospital where my parent had a bad experience at and I questioned why wouldn’t my parent go to a different hospital.

My parent didn’t want to go by road ambulance to Perth because they are a big person and it is very uncomfortable lying on the bed.

I’m just thinking they thought my parent was not to resuscitate so I feel they didn’t try as hard as they should have to get them the help my parent needed.

Everything turned out ok thank goodness my parent has had their operation and is doing great up and about happy to be alive.

The other hospital’s staff are fantastic and looking after my parent well.

Dear indigohc39

Hearing your parent had suffered a heart attack must have been a distressing experience and I am sorry you felt the Telehealth Doctor let you down by not sending your parent directly to Perth by Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

There are several decisions the Telehealth Doctor would have taken into consideration to ensure your parent’s transfer was safe and effectively coordinated and I apologise if the reasons were not communicated to you and your parent clearly.

I would encourage you to have a Goals of Care discussion with your parent and their doctor to ensure future treatment options documented are appropriate and acceptable to all.

Thank you for acknowledging the fantastic care provided by the Kulin Saint John Ambulance (SJA) and hospital staff. I am pleased your parent has recovered from their operation and is doing well.

Yours Sincerely,

Jenny Menasse
