"In-patient care"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Acute Medical Unit Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department Royal Perth Hospital / Older Adult Orthopaedics (Orthogeriatric) & Ward 8B

(as the patient),

Was transfered to Geriatric Ward in RPH with back fractures, after 2 days ED and 3 days in AMU where care was amazing.  I felt a notable decrease in care once there. Not given pain meds til 2hrs after asking therefore having to get double dose. I felt total disrespect for me when I spoke up nurse who I recall laughed in my face and mocked me.

In my opinion, handover for a high needs patient totally lacking which I believe negatively impacted all others in ward as they were violent, screaming and attacking staff and trying to eat their own faeces.

Seemingly hesitant nurses impacted my medical treatment when I had an anaphylactic reaction to a medication and I had to use my own epipen to inject myself.  Even Dr and other nurse commented on this.  I had 2nd reaction and nurse from other room came in a had to take over and push red emergency button as  nurses seemingly fluffing around.  When I asked for reassurance the if I rang bell they would come they responded with 'we will do our best'

Dear rhinoyj93,

I appreciate you taking the time to let us know of the amazing care you initially received at Royal Perth Hospital. However, I was truly disappointed to hear how subsequent experiences negatively impacted your patient journey.

Providing timely pain medication, displaying professionalism, and managing high need patients’ care and treatment accordingly are expected, and I am sorry RPH was not up to this standard during your stay on the Geriatric Ward.

I would like to investigate your situation further as reviewing our processes for any learnings is beneficial to improve the services we provide. I would appreciate you contacting the Consumer Engagement Unit on (08) 9224 1637 or via email: RPBG.feedback@health.wa.gov.au so a thorough review can be undertaken.

Again, I am sorry for the unpleasant aspects of your hospital stay and wish you a speedy recovery.

Kind Regards,

Mr Ben Noteboom

A/Executive Director
