"Falls prevention program duration"

About: Allied Health (Bass Coast Health)

(as the patient),

I learnt many strategies to prevent falls like balance and strength exercises, how to correctly use my walker through to how to manage if I do fall.

I would have liked other session to be continuous as I felt stronger if more knowledgeable after each session. I believe 6 weeks is not enough and won’t prevent falls ongoing.

In my opinion, more funding needs to be allocated to these services to decrease in patient admissions post fall.

Dear starez89,

Thank you for your feedback - very helpful - and I am keen to investigate what you have suggested. My understanding was that the way in which we provide our Falls program was based on what the evidence says we should do, but I am very happy to check that.

I also know that workforce shortfalls have been a problem in the past and have been a key contributor as to how many Falls programs are run - but I also know that staffing has improved. I will come back to you in the next week or so with another response and in the meantime, thank you once again for taking the time to provide us with your suggestions.

Kind Regards,

Jan

Dear starez89

Thank you for giving me some time to better understand the detail of our falls prevention program. It is a well-developed benchmarked program run by our Allied Health teams and it is focused on providing falls prevention education and strategies, with the aim to reduce the risk of falls.

As you described, it currently runs over 6 weeks, but we also understand that there are times when our clients need additional or longer support. We undertake an assessment at both the start and completion of the program, and my understanding is that if additional support is assessed as required, we prioritise these clients for ongoing physiotherapy appointments. Clients are also able to attend these programs more than once.

We acknowledge that it is a popular program and there are times when the wait list exceeds the capacity, so we are looking to see if we can increase the number of group opportunities. This will be dependent on us having enough staff to run the program.

If you did not get offered another program or access to a physiotherapy appointment, please call or text me on 0472 846 355.

Thank you once again for taking the time to provide us with your feedback and it has given us a nudge to look to see if we can increase the number of programs going forward.

All the best,

Jan
