"My relative seeking help"

About: Bunbury Mental Health / Bunbury Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU)

(as a parent/guardian),

After 3 years of extreme stress, my relative visited their GP for help with anxiety and anger management.  In a 15 minute consult, they were prescribed Sertraline 50mg initially, then on the follow-up visit was given 100mg.  What happened to them in the following 6 months was a nightmare to friends and family.  They became manic! So I sought help from another facility.  It was very apparent to them that my relative had an underlying problem that was exacerbated by the Sertraline.

They then referred my relative to the Bunbury APU for immediate treatment.  My relative was admitted as an involuntary patient for a ridiculous period of 72 hours then discharged without treatment. My relative's time spent in this unit was terrifying to them, so when they got progressively worse, my relative flatly refused to return!  I believe as a result they have now absconded and is living on the streets in a swag. My relative has lost their job, their home and their family are fighting an exhausting, and apparently losing battle to have them given the care they so desperately need.

This is a beautiful human being with 3 little children that cry every night wondering if their parent is going to ever come home. You can't imagine how the system can fail so someone so badly.

Please know that the other facility has been highly empathic and caring, whilst I feel the staff at the Bunbury APU need to be held accountable for what I believe is their lack of insight into the mental health conditions of the patients who put their life in their hands.

Dear indiaqt45

I am very sorry to hear about the challenges your relative is currently going through. It's truly disheartening to know that your loved one has experienced distress while in our care. It is our priority to ensure that no one feels this way, so I would greatly appreciate it if you would contact me so I can ensure that your relative is receiving the support they need while they are in crisis.

I would also like to understand what happened while they were an inpatient that caused them distress so that I can ascertain if there is anything we need to do to improve the care we provide.

Could you please contact our Coordinator of Consumer Feedback on 08 9753 6537 or by email swfeedback@health.wa.gov.au and they will organise a time for us both to speak.

Thank you for taking the time to speak up on behalf of your relative and I hope to hear from you soon.

Warm regards

Debbie Easther

Unfortunately I have not been able to investigate your concerns as I do not have your relative's details. I remain concerned for the ongoing care of your relative and would welcome contact from you to see if there is anything I can do to support them.

Please feel free to call me on 97812350 if you require support or would like to give me information so that I can investigate the care of your relative.
