"My parent with dementia"

About: Yarrawonga Hospital / Urgent Care Centre

(as a relative),

Absolutely disgusted. We presented to ED via ambulance. Sat in a room for several hours with a nurse attending once when we arrived. Several hours later a Dr came in & asked what was going on. We told them & they said that they can't just admit someone for dementia if they are ok. My parent is confused more than normal, their face dropped last night. My parent was out in street at 2.30am urinating. They have headaches. The paramedics put in a report recommending they be admitted.

My parents are both nearly 80 years old & it seems you couldn't or wouldn't help them. Where is your duty of care, compassion, empathy? Absolutely disgusted in the way we were treated.

We also presented to ED 1 week before that sent by GP & dementia Australia & Dr then told us our GP doesn't work at hospital so basically it seemed they didn't care what our GP suggested.

My parent is very unwell with dementia. Isn't it bad enough we have to deal with them the way they are than to be treated the way we were by your hospital. Absolutely disgusted, gutted, at a loss as to what we do. You go to a hospital for guidance, support not to be told nothing they can or seemingly want to do.

Dear foxtrotxx55

My name is Frank and I am the Interim Chief Executive at Yarrawonga Health.

I am very distressed to read your story and I am very sorry that your experience with our health service was such a distressing one for both you and your parent.

What you have described is not what we strive for at Yarrawonga Health and please be assured we want to help.

Our usual process, in a situation such as you describe, is to organize for a meeting with our patient and their family and our care team. Our care team includes our Senior Medical Officer, Nurse Unit Manager and if helpful Allied Health staff and Nurse Practitioner.

I hope you and your parent are okay, but please contact me if you remain in need of assistance. I can be contacted on 03 5743 8130 or at frank.evans@yh.org.au.

Once again I am very sorry for your experience and assure you that we want to help.

Your sincerely

Frank Evans

Interim Chief Executive Officer
