My recent stay at Sydney Eye Hospital deserves my accolades.
I was diagnosed with Choroidal Melanoma recently and received surgery to place a radioactive plaque on my eye which was recently removed.
Although anxious and uncertain every person I encountered at the Sydney Eye Hospital was amazing.
I want all the new Australians working there to know I think they are incredible people to learn English as a second language and that the nurses and other specialists that study that they are indeed legends!
They are speaking English with so many others that have a different first language too - or that have English accents themselves eg. New Zealand, English, Irish, Scottish, South African etc as well as a lot of good old Aussie slang - older immigrants with their own pronunciation too.
Bravo!
The ones studying in this second language get an extra special respect and kudos from me including the lovely student 'Yong' I am sorry now I did not get her exact and full name - Yong was with me at my admission (in training) and it was so lovely that she was on my ward after the operation. I do hope Yong gets this review and it can be included in Yong's assessments that were taking place.
The English these people learn and study with is the exact same English that a lot of us Australian born struggle with as a first language - in the difficulty of spelling! the same sounding words spelt differently and they really are such different meanings at times.
So here is thanks so much to all of the people included in my care 🙏 Nurses, Admin, Cleaners, Cooks, kitchen staff and especially to my surgeon Li-Ann Lim and Dr Michael (although I didn't expect him in surgery he was there ❤️) and the awesome anaesthetic Dr and surgical team 👏 forever grateful!
