I cannot fault the lovely staff on maternity - the midwives, nurses, PCAs and clerical staff were incredible, kind and attentive even though they were short staffed. I am forever grateful for the care that myself and my daughter received.
It would have been lovely if the rooms were big enough to include a recliner chair for my partner to stay overnight in. It was a very special time for our new family, as is for all families welcoming a new baby, it was really a shame they had to go home each night.
During labour I had the wireless ctg attached as my baby needed to be monitored, however this was then taken away from me to be used on another patient as the ward only had one. For whatever reason the other patient took priority, which meant I was then connected to wires, limiting how I could continue to labour. I later found out the other patient refused the wireless ctg anyway. It was a massive interruption for my birthing process. Perhaps more funding for equipment on maternity ward might be an idea.
I am very disappointed with the meals I received. As someone with dietary requirements, the hospital kitchen were unable to meet my needs adequately. I could list a fault in all the meals I received. One example - as a vegetarian, I was given cold meat sandwiches. They then provided a vegetarian ‘meal’ which was a small mound of rice with veg that wouldn’t be enough for a toddler. I did not receive one balanced meal (protein, fat and carbs) during my 3 night admission. For a breastfeeding mother who had just had a very long labour and delivery, what was served was really inappropriate and inadequate. As a health professional, I’m actually quite embarrassed that the menus/kitchen are unable to accommodate for someone with dietary needs and preferences that deviate from the norm. Disappointing Kalgoorlie Health Campus, in my opinion, do better.
I’d like to add - I am only sharing my experience in hope that enough change will occur and this won’t happen for the next woman, person, patient.
