"Heart surgery"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital / DB3S - Cardiothoracic Surgery Ward

(as the patient),

The surgery was a Maize procedure for AF. The surgery itself went well but i was in tremendous pain on the right side of my chest. I also had a chronic cough that wouldn't go away.  Every time I coughed it felt like being stabbed with a knife. Chest xray showed fluid in the right lung with a partial collapse.

On day 5 i was basically asked to go home because they needed the bed for someone else. This was mid-morning. I was made to wait in the transit lounge for my discharge medication which i didn't receive until approximately 4 pm that afternoon.

I was still in alot of pain when my 6 week post-op appointment came around so i mentioned it to the surgeon. They said that i had pleurisy probably caused by the surgical ports used.

Around the 10 weeks mark i still had a lot of pain in that right lung, GP ordered a chest X-ray which still showed some fluid. When the pain was still there at 12 weeks i had a CT scan which showed thickening of the plura and scarring. So this is where i am at the moment. I truly feel that not enough was done at the hospital to do anything about looking into the real cause of that pain before i was sent home
