"Professional and kind health care"

About: Albany Health Campus / Day Procedure Unit

(as the patient),

I recently attended Albany Health Campus for a day procedure. From start to finish I received professional health care, but more than this, I felt seen, heard and was treated as a human being should be, with kindness.

From the very start simply walking into the campus, the gardens were well kept and there was appropriate signage.

When I approached the reception desk, I was promptly seen to and a Volunteer even walked me to the day procedure area - this Volunteer was like like an unexpected added layer of security, like having your mum or grandma around always makes you feel safe.

Upon arrival to the day procedure area, I was promptly seen, with the individual checking me in at the reception type desk professional and efficient in her duties - explaining clearly the next steps that a nurse would collect me shortly.

I then only waited a short period of time before a nurse came to get me. This nurse, from memory her name was Jenny, was again like a family member, like an Aunty - warm, approachable, a touch of humour - plus professional and very attentive.

I got ready, then given a bed, and settled in, even with a warm blanket, with the nurse explaining next steps - being my vitals would be checked and the doctors would come and see me next.

Dr Brett came to see me first - I was instantly at ease with his relaxed professional bed side manner, explaining to me what will happen and any risks.

Then another Dr came to see me, I can’t recall his name, but again he had the most incredible bed side manner, professional but warm and clearly explaining everything he needed to.

Even was I was taken into the theatre room, the Orderly that took me, stopped to look me in the eye, say his name and say what he was doing.

The last time I was wheeled into a theatre room I pretty much had a panic attack being scared out of my mind (private hospital in Perth), this time I arrived being relaxed, at ease and completely confident and safe in the hands of everyone there.

After the procedure again all the nurses in my after care were attentive, warm and informative. To the point as I left the hospital I saw a nurse who had provided me with care, stop her lunch break, to say to me all the best.

Every single one of the people above stopped and looked me in the eye when going about their jobs - even with the millions of tasks running through their minds. I’m not sure if this is just in the country, but to be seen and feel as if you are just like family - is a pretty incredible public and free health care system.
