My son had dental surgery at Albany Health Campus last week and I would just like to say how fantastic my experience was from the pre op visits to the discharge post having his surgery.
My son has Autism and can become extremely distressed when he undergoes medical procedures, meeting new people, going to different environments, and anything that disrupts his routine.
From the minute we met Dr Tracey (dental surgeon) for initial examination, to seeing Dr Zoran (Anaesthetist) for his pre op check and for my son to know who was going to help him get to sleep and letting my son choose how this would be done, it was a dream.
On the day, we met Pia (a gorgeous nurse who chatted to my son and helped him with his anxiety), Dr Zoran and Dr Tracey who saw him preop, Linda who took him through to theatre, Paul and Dr Zoran who chatted to my son and made him feel comfortable, and then helped him go to sleep explaining every step to him (and allowing mum to stay there while he did) to then the recovery staff who brought me in so that my son (as promised by Dr Zoran) would wake up to his mum right there beside him. Wendy in Recovery was very adept at keeping my son calm, even covering up the cannula that upset him when he saw it. Van Van was great with the removal in post op ward.
He even got ice-cream as he was promised :)
I just wanted to say thankyou to all of the staff we saw who work in the theatres and all of their departments for not only making me feel at ease but for all of the extra attention and caring attitudes everyone displayed to my son. I had been anticipating a stressful day where my son would be extremely distressed due to his issues associated with autism but was pleasantly surprised and felt quite relaxed throughout the whole process as I knew my son's needs were not only acknowledged but also catered for.
Based on my experience I would definitely recommend the theatres to everyone in the region.
