"Eating disorders and failure to adequately include a parent"

About: Eating Disorders Program

(as a parent/guardian),

Recently my child was admitted to PCH for refeeding and subsequently diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa.  As a separated parent, I feel I have been deliberately and systemically excluded from my child’s life.  Once I was informed my child had been admitted I contacted the hospital for an update on my child’s condition and to find out more information. I was given very basic information and informed I must supply all family court documentation before I would be given any further information.  I provided all documentation requested immediately.

I spoke with a team of people over the phone, it was unclear how many people were in the room and who was speaking.  At one point a senior paediatrician spoke on the phone but I was unable to identify their name.  I felt this Dr was very hostile toward me from the outset of the conversation and informed me that I would be updated by the team but only by phone.  I was made to feel that I was not welcome to ask questions and be involved in my child’s treatment.  When I tried to find out the names of all the people in the meeting and their roles, I was questioned as to why I wanted that information and was denied the information.

I was offered a 30 min phone appointment to go through an intake medical questionnaire as part of the assessment process for an eating disorder.  When I requested a face to face appointment I was denied the opportunity and therefore was seemingly forced to accept the 30 min phone call.

I have tried to reach out to Clinic K outpatient team since my child has been discharged from their inpatient stay, knowing they are engaged with the outpatient eating disorder team.  I have been refused any face to face appointments with any of the team, and told I would simply receive fortnightly email updates only.  I have received just one email update, and now I have received an email out of nowhere stating they have reviewed their process and I will only receive an update by email 3 monthly!  This is seemingly despite my child being seriously ill with a life threatening mental health condition.

I attended the two day ED essentials workshop where it was made very clear that it is essential for all family to be involved in their child’s treatment and separated parents are encouraged to attend all appointments and engage in family therapy and treatment to help the child recover.  I understand it was very important that all family’s are on the same page through treatment.

I feel that the staff involved at PCH appear to be excluding my involvement in my child’s treatment without reasonable or justified cause.

Dear Bethechange

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion. This must be a very stressful time for your family and I acknowledge the challenges that separated parents experience in these situations.

I am sorry to learn of your experience and that you have received minimal updates on your child’s progress. Families play an integral role in their child’s care and I understand your desire to be included and support your child’s recovery. The clinical team is very happy to involve you in your child’s care as clinically appropriate, and to update you on your child’s progress in a meaningful way as often as would be helpful to you. I encourage you to contact the Child and Family Liaison Service by phone on 08 6456 0032 or by email at CAHSfeedback@health.wa.gov.au so that we can put you in touch with your child’s treating team and offer further support.

Yours sincerely

Update posted by Bethechange (a parent/guardian)

Thankyou for your response. Whilst there has been a willingness to make an appointment, the information provided has been less than forthcoming.

In addition, a staff member approached another parent and confronted them about this post, suggesting they had made the post and proceeded to attempt to question their reason for making the complaint. This is highly inappropriate, especially as the staff member was incorrect in identifying the parent. If someone wishes to make a complaint anonymously, it is their right to do so without repercussion or confrontation of staff members, especially those on the treating team.

I am appalled at the overall handling of this matter by the hospital on all sides.

Dear Bethechange

Thank you for reaching out on Care Opinion. I appreciate your feedback about your experience with the Eating Disorders Service.

I am sorry to learn that a member of staff approached another parent about the story you had posted. I acknowledge that there are many reasons that parents and carers may wish to remain anonymous when raising concerns about their child’s care and respect their right to do so. All families should expect that their complaints will be handled in a confidential manner and without fear of repercussion or confrontation.

Please accept my sincere apology for your interaction with the member of staff. It is our expectation that all staff communicate with families in a compassionate and respectful manner, in accordance with CAHS’ values.

I would like to assure you that your feedback has been shared with the service area manager to ensure that staff receive further education on complaint handling. If you are open to further investigating your concerns to enable a more targeted approach, I encourage you to contact the Child and Family Liaison Service for a confidential discussion by phone on 08 6456 0032 or by email at CAHSfeedback@health.wa.gov.au.

I am pleased to hear that you have had an appointment with your child’s treating team and encourage you to reach out to them to ensure that you receive information about your child’s progress in a way that is helpful to you.
