"Their support"

About: Integrated Cancer Services - WACHS South West

(as a service user),

I can not speak highly enough of the care I have been given by the Cancer nurses and team at the Busselton Health Campus. To have their support here takes away the need for those of us with cancer to travel so often to Bunbury adding to stress at this difficult time.

Recently I had two examples of their support in the one week. Firstly I had one of the cancer team call me to see how I was going and did I need anything. She has been following up on a nutrition supplement for me , unfortunately currently out of stock in WA. Some time ago when I went to the hospital with a problem after surgery she had referred me to an emergency doctor who was on duty . Very fortunately for me the doctor picked up that I had the risk of a blood clot in my neck.

The second contact I had after the nurse’s call was from the team’s dietitian who went through how I was going with my eating. I have found my appetite, especially just after chemo, to be very poor and I have been losing weight. We had a phone discussion and she suggested that I come in and get weighed on the hospital scales. She is also following up on the nutrition supplement and was able to give me some samples as well as some ideas on what I could try to eat. She also encouraged me to drink more than I have been!

It seems to me, and others I know using the service offered, that the cancer nurses and team are special people who bring more than just expertise to what they do, but compassion and smiles, so important when days can be grey.
