"Appointment with my child at the emergency department."

About: Broome Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

To Whom it may concern,

I am writing to complain regarding the incident that happened recently at the emergency. My child and I arrived at the hospital to attend my child's appointment for Midazolam trial. The person who rang me said to come at a specified time. I was supposed to come earlier than that so that they can do it earlier but they told me not to come early because at that time is when they do hand over.

We check in at the triage and wait for 45 mins then I ask the clerck to check how much longer do we need to wait because my child starting to get anxious of waiting and they were starving because they're on fasting.

The clerck told me that they're not sure and they will check but no one get back to me. So I waited again patiently although I'm starting to get anxious too. My child kept looking for food in their bag but I didn't put any food there so they couldn't eat at all. I just give them water although they are not allowed as well.

After two hours I ask the nurse again. They said the doctor was already discussing the plan for my child and the doctor overheard me and approached me by the window to say that they needed to talk to the paediatrician first. So I waited again for half an hour. My child started to keep looking for food again. Then they saw food from someone else and suddenly snatched that food. Luckily that other person was kind and offered the food to them. But I've told them that my child is not allowed to eat. I feel bad that I can't give my child any food.

So, I decided to cancel the appointment. I talked to the nurse to cancel it and I can't wait any longer my my child is starving and I'm starving too I was upset about what happened to us. I know that you have priority but I feel you should also think about our situation. My child has got disability they don't know or understand why they can't eat or drink and I think it's not good enough that you let us wait there for two hours. I believe this appointment should have been done with preparation if you told us to come by speechified time I could understand if we waited for 30 minutes but not two hours. I think that is ridiculous! I am very upset. This is very traumatic for us especially for my child given that this is the second time it happened to them where my child had an MRI at another hospital before. My child needed to fast and waited longer than we expected without any food or drink.

I'm hoping this experience won't happen again in the future.

Hello Pipay,

I apologise for the delay with your visit to the Emergency Department for your child’s Midazolam Trial.

Your feedback has highlighted a couple of things I need to investigate here with the Emergency and Paediatric teams.

Could you please leave your best contact details with the Director of Nursing on phone (08) 9194 2852 or via email at Broome.DirectorofNursing@health.wa.gov.au

Once I have my findings I will be in touch.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback to us and supporting us in improving the care we provide to our patients and their families and carers.

Yours sincerely,

Emily Hunter
