"Pediatric emergency care"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I attended RGH ED recently with my teenage daughter with ongoing abdominal pain that had increased significantly overnight.

Was triaged promptly and with care and understanding and was directed to the pediatric waiting area due to her age.

They assessed by Dr Maryam (I hope I’ve spelt it correctly) and Nurse Megan. I was extremely impressed how understanding both were and how they explained the process and the plan to my daughter (and myself) but didn't speak to her like a child but didn't over complicate the information. They listened to her symptoms and didn't dismiss any of her concerns or details.

My daughter wasn't in the best mood (tired, a bit grumpy, uncomfortable and in pain) but both were extremely friendly, supportive and professional which could have be challenging with teenage attitude but both were a delight.

Megan had mentioned that she had only recently started at RGH coming from a different hospital originally and I think RGH made a fantastic decision in hiring her.

Due to bloods and other results showing nothing of concern we were given a referral for an outpatient ultrasound which will hopefully give more information on the cause of the pain.

I work in healthcare in the area but have never needed to attend an emergency department with my daughter previously, so it was a very different experience being the family member of the patient rather than the one assisting in patient treatment.

Dear serpensty66,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience from your recent visit to the Rockingham General hospital (RGH) Emergency Department (ED) with your daughter. I was very pleased to hear that you felt staff demonstrated understanding and that they listened to you and your daughter when you were explaining your concerns. It can be very stressful when a child is unwell and I am pleased the ED team were able to relieve some of that stress by explaining the processes and the plan of care.

I sincerely hope that your daughter is feeling better and once again thank you for sharing your experience, I will pass on your thanks to the ED team and the staff members you have mentioned by name.

Kind Regards

Kath Smith
