"Head Injury in toddler"

About: Karratha Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My baby fell and split their eyebrow open. We took them to our local hospital in Karratha and we waited. I felt I had to push to have my infant seen by a Dr because we had 2 different nurses suggest that we just take my baby home and keep it clean.

We were taken back and put into a fast track bay where I was handed sterile water and told to clean their wound. I'm not a nurse and had no idea if what I was doing was correct. We were then sent out to the waiting area where we waited.

We arrived in the mid-morning and were finally taken back again in the early afternoon. My baby had missed their daytime sleep and was overtired, overstimulated and hungry. We had run out of snacks for our child. It took another 40mins for the Dr to agree to close the wound in their head.

I felt they then messed about while my baby screamed because we were holding them down. Our baby eventually fell asleep on me because they were so exhausted. We were given no aftercare advice and told not to stress too much because it wasn't a big knock so no issues with concussion.

Dear ParentWhoKnowsBetter,

Thank you for coming forward with your concerns regarding the delay in care and appropriate treatment that you experienced with your child recently at Karratha Health Campus Emergency Department.

I was disappointed to read you were left feeling unsupported and frustrated by the medical and nursing staff, resulting in not receiving the assessment and care for your child needed in a timely manner. I would appreciate being able to speak with you so that I can learn more about what happened and initiate a thorough review with our clinical team. At the completion of the review, and if you are willing, I would like to involve you in discussions relating to any outcomes or recommendations resulting from the review. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience on 08 9144 7652 or via email at: Matthew.Wells@health.wa.gov.au

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your story. I do hope that I hear from you in the near future, and that your child has recovered well from their injury.

Kind regards

Matt Wells
