"Inappropriate seclusion"

About: Bentley Mental Health Services

(as the patient),

I was admitted into bentley mental health hospital. They took my mobile phone which I wasn't advised of before I went.

They also secluded me. I won't give away any personal details but after my admission I have done some mental health studies and have learnt that seclusion is the last resort. I felt they did not try anything to deescalate me before secluding me nor, I understand, did they get permission from a psychiatrist.

Very unhappy. I was then transferred to another hospital which I felt was exceptional!

Dear salez98

I was very sorry to read of your experience during your admission to Bentley Mental Health Service.

Occasionally, mobile phones are stored for safekeeping during an inpatient admission to ensure our patients are able to have a positive and uninterrupted focus of their mental health wellbeing. I would like to acknowledge though, that you felt disappointed to find this out once admitted to hospital.

Seclusion is sometimes used when staff believe there is an imminent risk of patient harm or harm to others, to ensure safety for all. This intervention is carefully considered by the treating team to ensure the safety of a patient and used if it is believed there is no less restrictive way of preventing injury or damage.

It is difficult to comment further without knowing your details and I appreciate your request to remain anonymous; however, if you wish to have your concerns investigated further, I encourage you to contact the Patient Experience Department on (08) 9224 1637, 8am to 4pm or email RPBG.feedback@health.wa.gov.au whereby a full review of the issues you raised will be carried out.

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion, I wish you all the best in your continuing healthcare journey.

Kind regards

Ben Noteboom
