"Lack of confidentiality"

About: Geraldton Hospital

(as other),

I am a member of the community expressing concern over your staff, this isn’t the first time this has happened but I believe the remarks made by this one particular person left me shocked and I had to walk out of the shop I was at.

I was lining up behind a staff member, I found the comments the staff member made to the person with them were atrocious regarding what seemed to be a patient’s parent and the care they provided them, they laughed at wanting to walk out of their shift because the patient's hormones and wanted to sedate the parent and how annoying the patient was being to them.

What lead me to believe the staff member was a kids nurse was that they said they had cared for this feral child and their parent was brutally annoying and demanding, they were bought from ED on their shift and from the start they annoyed the staff member so bad they wanted to leave their shift. They went on to say they made another nurse do them obs for them so they didn’t have to tolerate them so much.

As an older parent myself, I would have hated to have someone dislike their job so much they whinge about their job outside of work looking after me.

I hope I don’t have to come to hospital and experience the care this nurse gave the poor child.

I stood there for about 15 minutes waiting for coffee whilst listening to them, in the end it just got too much and I had to leave.

Dear hydrusxt67,

I am very concerned to read about the issues you raise regarding confidentiality. Patient confidentiality in healthcare is so important and is at the core of the relationship between patients and clinicians. It builds trust when patients are seeking care for medical issues and it preserves the integrity of the medical community.

As a result of your feedback, I have already shared your story and spoken with all hospital managers and have asked them to discuss confidentiality with their team immediately, stressing that it is the expectation that patient information is treated with the utmost confidentiality at all times.

I would very much like to speak to you in person and listen to your concerns in more detail so I can thoroughly address them with Lisa Pinkney, Coordinator of Nursing. My name is Cameron Ross, I am the Operations Manager Geraldton Hospital. I can be contacted on 9956 2369 or geraldtonopsmanager.wachs-midwest@health.wa.gov.au. Alternative you can reach Ms Pinkney on 9956 2380.

I do hope to hear from you soon and please be reassured we are taking your concerns very seriously.

Regards

Cameron Ross
