"Care in recovery after manipulation done on knee"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward

(as the patient),

Manipulation was needed after three months of partial knee replacement

So for 3 months mentally my brain was knowing that my knee wouldn’t bend

So when I had manipulation done and was in recovery in day surgery someone that was in the manipulation operation came and was telling me how well they got the knee to bend

And said let’s see how far it will bend

So mentally my mind knowing that it couldn’t  bend wasn’t prepared for the person to pick up my leg and bend it to full capacity like they did when I was under on the table  with pain and not prepared it scared me and hurt me and even the nurses looked at one another surprised and applogised after the person had left and left me in tears

Nurses also spoke to physio about it and I believe she even was surprised how it happened.  All I am getting at is that seem I wasn’t mentally prepared to have my knee bend like that straightaway my mind still was in the way of thinking it couldn’t bend now has affected my healing process and now made it harder for me to accept and now has to try train my brain to know that knee can bend more.

I just feel this process needs to be thought through  a bit more for the patients mental state before they damage mentally what has already been done

Thank you for sharing your healthcare experience horologiumyf54 with the surgical services here at Bunbury Hospital.

I am sorry that your experience was not as healing as it should have felt. I apologise that communication around the manipulation wasn’t clear and you hadn’t felt prepared. It is important that we get feedback about our service, so I appreciate that you took the time and effort to let us know about your experience and I will share that with our Orthopaedic Department clinicians.

My name is Dr Jacinta Cover and I am Medical Co-Director for Surgical Services at Bunbury Hospital. If you would like to share more about your experience, please contact me directly. I can be reached by phone 9722 2726 or email Jacinta.cover@health.wa.gov.au
